Aspects of Human Centred Design in the Role of Visualization Systems: Signature Exploration and the Use of Generic Datasets

Visualization can be used at different points, and for different purposes, in the process of analyzing complex data. This paper describes a concept, signature exploration, designed to assist in appreciating the computational element of analytical and visualization processes and thus to increase the user’s comprehension of different methods and their visual depictions. The paper highlights aspects of visualization that support human centred design and gives examples of the use of generic dataset exploration (a signature exploration technique). The desirability of developing and using error depiction methods is indicated.
